George Conington

George was the son of Edward Conington who was a butcher at 24 High Street in 1851 and at 38 High Street in 1861.

In 1881 George was himself a butcher at 22 All Saints Street.

He moved over the road to 2 All Saints' Street in 1891 and stayed there until his death in 1913.

John Edward Conington

John was born in 1887 the son of Edward and Mary Conington a butcher at 23 St George’s Street.

In 1911 John was listed as a butcher (partner) living at 23 St George’s Street with his aunt. He married in 1912 and stayed in Stamford until the 1930s.

The shop was taken over by F. Dickinson when John moved to Manor Farm in Uffington and where in 1939 he is listed as a farmer rearing cattle and sheep and keeping poultry. He died in 1966.

He joined the RAF in 1917 and in World War Two won a gallantry award for rescuing an airman from a plane which crashed in Uffington in 1941.
