Frank Riley and Family
Frank Riley’s father and grandfather had been farmers and butchers in Langham, Rutland and he set up shop in Stamford following his marriage in 1856. By 1900 he was a prominent citizen in the town, a partner with Royce in an auctioneer’s business and an Alderman.
His elder son, Frank William, was in charge at 25 High Street and his younger son, Harry, was also a butcher at 10 High Street, St Martin’s.
Frank William died suddenly after only a few hours illness in April 1911 aged 45.
The family were strong Non-Conformists and the funeral took place at Star Lane chapel before he was buried in the cemetery.
He left a young family of 3 sons and 2 daughters but, as often happened, they were educated beyond ‘trade’ and none of his or his brother’s sons entered the butcher’s business.
Alderman Riley supervised the business until it was taken over by Herbert Sanders.
