Rollings and Williams
There are so many Rollings and Williams it has been difficult to identify which members of which families set up together to run two shops in the 1950s.
They were listed in Dolby’s Directory as ‘nurserymen, salads and flowers’ at 20 High Street and ‘greengrocers’ at 5 Red Lion Street.
It is believed that Jack Rollings who lived on Priory Terrace in the 1950s ran the High Street shop but around 1960 the High Street shop went under the name W A Williams and the Red Lion Street shop under the name Rollings. Both were greengrocers.
Rollings continued through the 1960s and W A Williams became the last greengrocer on the High Street continuing until the end of the 1970s.
(Currently it is not thought there was any connection between Frank Williams/Middleton Frucon of 62 High Street and W A Williams.)
