Herbert Sanders
In July 1911, Herbert Sanders of Eastgate, Bourne announced in the press that he had sold his stock and utensils and was moving to Stamford.
He was in his mid-30s and ten years earlier had been a journeyman butcher living in Stamford - maybe even at Rileys?
Or perhaps he was with R H Brown as his sister-in-law later married John L Grant.
He remained at 25 High Street until 1938 when sadly his only son died of peritonitis in Hong Kong while serving with the Royal Navy.
Possibly this was so upsetting that he gave up the shop because when the 1939 Register was compiled, he was described as an Unemployed Master Butcher.
He served as a Special Constable in World War II and was 97 years old when he died in 1973.
