In 1900 St Peter's was a social mix. The well to do residents at the east side of the street would walk down the street past Exeter Court and Dixon's Court occupied by people living in poor conditions.
The street had a number of tradesmen, three shoemakers, a shirtmaker, a millwright and a mill owner dealing in flour and animal food.
There was a watchmaker and a horticultural builder, a painter and decorator, a photographer, a builder and a whitesmith.\

The residents could buy the food they needed here. There was Markham's butchers at number 4 , Andrew's bakery and grocery at 9a, Peregrine Emmitt's bakery and confectionery at number 14 and Sheffield's grocery at 29. The first supermarket in town A.C.O opened here at no. 22 in 1963.

The only remaining food shop today is Asker's bakery in King's Mill Lane.
